VERY Close To Original
Jeffrey Parker (Concho, AZ) 1/7/2023 2:45 PM
Comparing the color to original USAF handguards, these are about 95%. That may be due to fading of the original. There are four minor differences. The first being quality. These are noticeably higher quality. The originals are... "lumpy" in that internal bracing is visible on the outside. The new ones are perfectly smooth. Second, the heatshield inside the originals are riveted in place. The new ones don't have rivets. Of course that can't be seen from the outside. Third, the fit is better too. The replacements don't pinch your hand as "some" of the originals did. Fourth, The color goes all the way through, whereas the originals were painted. Under the green paint it's a "red oxide primer" color which is quite noticeable when chipped of scratched. I don't know if that's the actual color of the fiberglass / bakelite / plastic or a primer. I've never seen damage on the reddish part. The new ones can't do that unless you repaint them both colors, then beat them up to look battle worn. Overall these are a great choice for your retro build. Especially considering you aren't likely to find an original set that isn't broken and is available. Back 100 years ago when I was in the usaf, and these were considered "common" maybe 10% at most were green. Again, the biggest "flaw" is they look too good.
